This is the Bloghints privacy policy. It explains, in plain English, what bloghints.com collects, why, and what you can do about it. Bloghints is a small site run by Ellys Kho. If anything here is unclear, or you want to ask about your data, please write to us through the contact page.
The short version
- You can read everything on Bloghints without an account. There is no sign-up for readers.
- Our own site sets no cookies for ordinary visitors. Google AdSense, which shows the ads, may use cookies.
- If you submit a site, we keep what you type into the form so we can review it, and we add your email to our Webmaster Lists email. You can unsubscribe with one click.
- We do not sell your personal information.
When you read the site
Cookies. Bloghints does not set its own cookies for anonymous visitors. A short-lived session cookie is only created when you send a form (for example the submission form), so the site can check that the form really came from you and show you any error messages. It is deleted when you close your browser.
Dark and light mode. If you switch the colour theme, your choice is saved in your own browser's local storage so the site remembers it on your next visit. It stays on your device and is not sent to us.
Server logs. Like almost every website, our web server and hosting provider record basic technical information about each request: IP address, browser and device type, the page requested (including any search words typed into our search box, because they are part of the page address), the referring page and the time. We use these logs to keep the site running, fix errors and block abuse. We do not use them to build profiles of visitors.
Missing pages and clicks. When someone lands on a page that does not exist, we record the missing address and the page that linked to it, so we can fix broken links. When you click a site on one of our lists, we add one to that site's click counter. Neither record contains your IP address or anything else that identifies you.
Advertising and Google AdSense cookies
Bloghints shows ads from Google AdSense. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this website or other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies lets Google and its partners show you ads based on your visits to Bloghints and other sites on the internet.
You can turn off personalised advertising from Google in Google Ads Settings. Blocking cookies in your browser also limits them, although you may still see ads that are based on the page you are reading. Google explains what it collects and how in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.
When you submit a site
The submission form asks for the site name, site URL, your email address, a category, a short description and whether you want a free or featured listing. We also store your IP address and the time of the submission, to stop spam and repeated submissions.
We use this information to:
- review the site by hand and add it to one of our webmaster lists if it fits;
- contact you about your submission, for example if you asked for a featured listing;
- send you the Webmaster Lists email, an occasional message with new lists and recent articles. The form tells you this before you submit.
The site name, URL and description of an approved site are published on the list, together with the site's server IP address. Your email address is never published.
The Webmaster Lists email
Every email has an unsubscribe link at the bottom, and supporting email apps such as Gmail and Outlook show a one-click unsubscribe button. After you unsubscribe, we keep your address only marked as unsubscribed, so a later site submission does not sign you up again. If you join on purpose through an email signup form on the site, you are subscribed again.
Search engine pings (IndexNow)
When we publish or update a page, the site tells search engines through IndexNow. The message contains only our own domain, a verification key and the addresses of the changed pages. It contains no information about visitors.
Who else sees data
Our hosting provider stores the website, its database and its server logs, and our emails are sent through its mail service. Google receives data through AdSense as described above. Apart from that we do not share, rent or sell personal information, unless the law requires us to.
How long we keep it
- Submissions: for as long as we need them to review and manage the listing.
- Email addresses: until you unsubscribe; after that only the unsubscribed marker is kept.
- Server logs: for the period set by our hosting provider.
Your choices
- Unsubscribe from our emails at any time with the link in any email.
- Ask us to show, correct or delete the information we hold about you through our contact page.
- Turn off personalised ads in Google Ads Settings, or block cookies in your browser.
Children
Bloghints is written for webmasters and bloggers and is not aimed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
Changes to this policy
If the way the site works changes, we will update this page and the date at the top.
