This free web directory list collects general web directories where you can submit a website without paying. Every site here was added by hand, not copied from another blog, and our link checker regularly confirms it still loads; dead sites are removed. Use it to pick a few relevant, human-reviewed directories, not to collect as many links as possible.
How the directories on this list are checked
Bloghints started in 2006 as a hand-checked web directory, and the lists still work the same way. Before a directory is added, we look for these signs:
- the site loads and has a working submit page;
- listings link out to real, live websites;
- the categories make sense and are not filled with casino, pill or spam listings;
- a free listing option still exists.
Directories that turn into parked domains, link farms or pay-only sites are removed. Lists change, so a directory that worked last month may close or start charging. If you find a dead one, tell us. The columns in the table are explained on the directory features page.
How to use this list
- Prepare one short, honest title (usually your site or business name) and two or three description variations.
- Open a directory and look at a few existing listings. If they look spammy, skip it.
- Choose the most specific category that fits your site.
- Submit, then write down the date, directory and category in a simple spreadsheet.
Our step-by-step guide to free directory submission covers each step in more detail.

How to submit safely
Most directories reject submissions for the same few reasons, so a little care saves a lot of waiting. Read the directory submission guidelines before you start. The short version:
- Use your real name as the title. Keyword titles like "Best Cheap Shoes Online" are the most common reason for rejection.
- Write each description by hand. Say what the site does in plain words. Do not paste the same text into every form.
- Only submit a finished site. Editors reject sites with "coming soon" pages, broken links or no contact page.
- Use an email address you check. Some directories send a confirmation link that expires.
- Skip reciprocal link demands unless the directory is one you would link to anyway.
What to expect after you submit
Free directories run on volunteer time. Some approve a listing in a day, some take weeks, and some never review the queue at all. That is normal, and it is why the instant approval directories exist as a separate list.
When your listing does go live, it may still never appear in Google. Google says plainly that indexing isn't guaranteed and that not every page it processes will be indexed. A listing on a deep category page of a small directory is exactly the kind of page that often stays unindexed. Some directories also add nofollow or ugc to outgoing links. That is fine: a listing can still send a few visitors and help people and search engines discover your site.
What I learned from submitting to many directories
I submitted my own sites to a lot of directories over the years: reciprocal directories, paid directories and many others here and there, such as viesearch.com. My first website reached Google PageRank 5 in the old toolbar PageRank days, back when submitting to directories was a normal part of building a site.
Then Google cracked down on link spam with the Penguin update in April 2012, which targeted sites buying links or getting them from link networks. I stopped mass submissions out of caution. The lesson I took from it, and the reason Bloghints checks every directory by hand, is simple: a directory is only worth your time if a real person reviews what gets listed.
Mistakes to avoid
- Submitting to hundreds of directories in one week with the same text.
- Using software that fills in submission forms for you.
- Listing in directories that accept anything, including adult and pill sites.
- Paying for "1,000 directory submissions" packages.
- Expecting directory links alone to move your rankings.
Google's spam policies name "low-quality directory or bookmark site links" as an example of link spam. If a directory looks like it exists only to sell links, learn how to spot a spammy web directory and stay away. If you want a faster review from a smaller group of editors, the paid directory list is the other option, but judge each one by its real audience, not its promises.
Is a free web directory list still worth using?
Yes, if you use it for what it is good at. A handful of relevant, edited directories can help a new site get found, bring a few targeted visitors and give your business a consistent presence on the web. They will not replace good content, and they will not rescue a site with nothing useful on it.
Use this free web directory list as a short menu: pick the directories that fit your site, submit carefully by hand, track what you sent, and spend the rest of your time on the pages that make people want to link to you.
Frequently asked questions
Are free web directories safe for SEO?
Edited directories with real listings are generally safe. The risk comes from low-quality directories that accept anything, which Google's spam policies list as an example of link spam. Submit to a few relevant directories by hand and skip any that look like link farms.
How long does approval take in a free directory?
It varies from a day to several weeks, and some free directories never review their queue. Keep a record of where you submitted so you do not submit twice. If speed matters, use an instant approval or paid directory instead.
Why is my directory listing not showing in Google?
Google does not index every page it finds, and listing pages deep inside small directories are often skipped. The listing can still send visitors and help discovery. Focus on your own pages for search visibility, not on getting every listing indexed.
